Thermo-Hydraulic Enhancement in Square Cross-Section Conical Spiral Tubes: A Numerical Investigation of Geometric Parameters

Improving heat transfer in heat exchangers is a crucial challenge in the field of engineering. The heat transfer can be increased by active or passive methods. One approach to increase heat transfer is to use spiral tubes. This study investigates thermo-hydraulic of conical spiral tubes using numerical simulations. The research examines three different step sizes and three angles with various fluid speeds. Thermo-hydraulic parameters, including Nusselt number and pressure drop, are calculated in this research. The study's findings indicate that the cone angle significantly increases both heat transfer and pressure drop in the conical spiral tube. Increasing the curvature also raises centrifugal force and the secondary flow breaking the boundary layer, leading to improved heat transfer. Increasing the cone angle from 65 degrees to 75 degrees at a Reynolds number of 1035 leads to a 10% rise in the Nusselt number and a 22% increase in pressure drop. Furthermore, increasing step size slightly affects heat transfer.
