Surface preparation is a fundamental factor that dictates the performance, strength, and durability of adhesive joints. Achieving optimal adhesion requires precise and tailored techniques that address the specific characteristics of the bonding surfaces. This review consolidates recent advancements in surface preparation methods, with a particular focus on laser patterning, biomimetic designs, and nano/micro structuring approaches. These techniques have been extensively studied for their ability to enhance bonding performance in various material systems, such as metal-polymer, polymer-polymer, and composite joints. The discussion centers on critical mechanisms that contribute to improved adhesion, including mechanical interlocking achieved through surface texturing, enhanced wettability that promotes better adhesive flow and coverage, and chemical bonding improvements that strengthen the molecular interactions at the adhesive-substrate interface. These advancements not only optimize adhesion but also improve the joint’s resistance to environmental and mechanical stresses. The review further highlights the practical implications of these innovations in addressing the evolving demands of industries such as aerospace, automotive, and biomedical engineering. For instance, the aerospace sector requires lightweight yet highly durable joints, while the biomedical field focuses on biocompatible and structurally reliable bonds. These diverse applications underscore the need for advanced surface preparation strategies that can be customized to meet specific industrial challenges. By presenting these insights, this review offers a comprehensive framework for understanding the current state of surface preparation technologies and identifies key areas for future research. It serves as a guide for developing next-generation methods that align with the increasingly stringent requirements of modern engineering applications. |
