The advancement of supersonic aircraft demands engines equipped with specialized input devices capable of efficiently managing high-speed airflow. These devices play a pivotal role in decelerating supersonic air to subsonic velocities before it enters the compressor and combustion chamber, ensuring engine performance and combustion stability. However, their design is constrained by several aerodynamic challenges, including shock wave formation, drag minimization, and flow control under varying atmospheric conditions.
This article reviews the classification of supersonic input devices based on their compression mechanisms, focusing on external, internal, and mixed compression systems. Emphasis is placed on understanding shock wave dynamics, including their impact on pressure distribution, aerodynamic loading, and boundary layer interactions. The design trade-offs between efficiency and drag reduction are analyzed, along with methods to mitigate performance losses caused by turbulent and unsteady flows.
In addition, this study highlights the role of pressure gradients in determining flow structure characteristics, such as expansion waves, compression waves, and boundary layer separation. These phenomena are critical for optimizing diffuser performance and ensuring reliable engine operation. Examples of calculated aerodynamic parameters are provided to illustrate the principles governing the design of these devices.
By addressing the aerodynamic and thermodynamic challenges inherent to supersonic input devices, this paper contributes to the broader understanding of propulsion system optimization for high-speed aircraft, paving the way for advancements in supersonic and hypersonic aviation technologies.
